THE
KNAPSACK
The production of our newsletter, The Knapsack, was one of Central Frontenac's most successful projects.
Several
issues have promoted Trails to Literacy by being widely
distributed throughout our area. We were able to keep the public
updated on our progress and display participants work, as well
as solicit for volunteers, sponsors, feedback, etc. Participants
distributed their attractive, multi-page newsletter to the community,
leaving copies in stores, at the post office and library, as well
as mailing copies out with the local newspaper.
The group created and published completely original material for every issue, including photographs, articles, stories and poems. Through research, writing, desktop publishing and distribution, most of our participants were able to be involved. There was also a large numeracy component covering costing and budgeting. The newsletter activity provided the most carry-over to the other delivery systems of our organization, such as one-to-one literacy/numeracy instruction, computer training and administrative co-op placements.
