Parry
Sound
(Sound Learning
Centre)
The Sound Learning
Centre in Parry Sound joined Trails to Literacy in November of 2001.
Originally they
planned to work with local snowmobile groups on area trails, but
the winter weather proved uncooperative and so the Centre turned
to investigating alternative projects.
One of the possibilities they looked into was working with a local food bank, helping design menus, coordinating inventory of donations, etc.
While deciding
on a project they were approached by the West Parry Sound District
Museum who requested their help in designing a brochure for their
museum.
They had a brochure
that guided them through the museum but felt there was a need for
another type that was geared to low literacy visitors who had difficulty
with the existing guides. The museum staff felt that making this
type of guide available would encourage more people to visit and
enjoy the museum.
This project
was taken on by the Sound Learning Centre and is in the process
of being developed. This would run a the gamut of skills that could
be learned or practiced, such as computers, graphic designing, math,
typing, research, etc.
